The 12 Most-Asked Car Detailing Questions, Answered by a Boise Detailer
After a few hundred details across Boise, Eagle, Meridian, and the rest of the Treasure Valley, we hear the same questions over and over. What is included, what does it cost, how long does it take, how often should I do it, and is it worth it. Here are the twelve we get most, answered with numbers from our own price list instead of national averages. The short version: a full detail in Boise runs $174.99 for a Premium Interior & Exterior, takes 90 minutes to 6 hours depending on the package, and most daily drivers should get one two or three times a year.
We pulled these from booking calls, quote requests, and the questions people type into Google before they find us. If yours is not here, text it to (208) 863-1442 and we will answer it directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is actually included in a full car detail?
A full detail covers both the interior and the exterior. On the outside: a hand wash, wheel and tire cleaning, exterior glass, tire dressing, and a wax or sealant for protection. On the inside: a complete vacuum, dashboard and console cleaning, door panels and trim, interior glass, vents, and a wipe-down of leather. That is our Premium Interior & Exterior package at $174.99. Elite packages add clay bar decontamination, machine paint correction, ceramic coating, steam cleaning, carpet extraction, leather conditioning, and headliner cleaning.
The one thing a "full detail" does not automatically include anywhere is paint correction. If someone quotes you a full detail for under $200 and promises to remove scratches, ask what machine they are using. Machine polishing is a separate, multi-hour process, which is why we bundle it into the Elite tier rather than pretending it fits into a 90-minute package. We wrote a full step-by-step breakdown in What's Included in a Full Car Detail.
2. How much does car detailing cost in Boise?
In Boise, a professional mobile detail starts at $99.99 for a Premium Exterior, $124.99 for a Premium Interior, and $174.99 for both together. Elite packages with deep interior work, paint correction, and ceramic coating run $295.00 to $849.99. Specialty vehicles are priced separately: boats from $399.99, RVs from $499.99, UTVs from $149.99, and golf carts from $99.99.
Those are starting prices for an average vehicle in average condition. Larger vehicles and heavier soiling (pet hair, smoke, set-in stains) cost more because they take more time and product. We confirm the exact number after a free inspection when we arrive, before any work begins. The Boise pricing guide explains what moves the price up or down.
3. How long does a detail take?
Premium Exterior or Premium Interior take about an hour each. The Premium Interior & Exterior bundle takes about 90 minutes. Elite Interior takes about 3 hours, Elite Exterior with paint correction and ceramic coating about 4 hours, and the full Elite Interior & Exterior about 6 hours. Add time for large vehicles or heavy condition.
Because we are mobile, you do not lose that time. We work in your driveway or office parking lot while you go about your day. The only thing you need to do is be reachable when we finish so you can walk the vehicle with us.
4. How often should I get my car detailed?
For most Treasure Valley daily drivers, a full detail two to three times a year keeps the car in good shape, with hand washes every two to four weeks in between. Cars with kids, dogs, or a long commute on I-84 benefit from quarterly interiors. A weekend-only garage car can go once a year.
Idaho adds its own calendar. A spring detail removes the winter's mag chloride and road grime before it does lasting damage. A late-summer or early-fall detail deals with wildfire ash, bug residue, and a summer of UV. If you have a ceramic coating, the paint side stretches out and the interior becomes the main reason to book.
5. Is professional detailing worth the money?
For most drivers, yes, for three reasons. It protects the vehicle's value, it catches problems (clear coat oxidation, leather cracking, mold under mats) before they get expensive, and it gives you back your weekend. It is not worth it if the car is a beater you plan to scrap, or if you genuinely enjoy spending a Saturday doing it yourself with the right tools.
We broke down the math, including when we tell people not to bother, in Is Mobile Car Detailing Worth the Money?
6. What is the difference between a car wash and a detail?
A car wash removes loose dirt from the outside of the car in a few minutes. A detail cleans and restores every surface, inside and out, and protects them afterward. Practically, that means a detail includes things a wash never touches: clay bar decontamination, wheel wells, door jambs, vents, seat tracks, carpets under the mats, leather conditioning, and a proper wax or coating.
The other difference is method. Automatic brush washes are the number one source of swirl marks we remove during paint correction. A hand wash with clean microfiber and the two-bucket method does not scratch the paint.
7. Can detailing remove scratches and swirl marks?
Swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, and oxidation live in the clear coat and can be removed with machine paint correction. A scratch you can catch a fingernail in has gone through the clear coat and needs touch-up paint or a body shop, not polishing. Our 1-step correction handles light to moderate defects and is included in the Elite Exterior package. Deeper defects need two-step correction, which we quote after seeing the paint.
A quick test: if the scratch disappears when you wet it, it is likely in the clear coat and correctable. If it stays visible when wet, it is deeper.
8. Ceramic coating vs. wax: which one should I get?
Wax is cheap, easy, and lasts four to eight weeks. Ceramic coating costs more up front, bonds to the paint chemically, and lasts two to five years. In Boise, with high-elevation UV, mag chloride in winter, and foothill dust year-round, wax simply does not last long enough to protect the paint between details. If you are keeping the car more than a couple of years, ceramic coating usually pays for itself in fewer washes and preserved resale value.
We include a sealant with every Premium Exterior, so you are never leaving with bare paint. Ceramic coating is in the Elite Exterior package at $595.99, always applied over corrected paint so nothing gets sealed in.
9. How long does ceramic coating last?
Two to five years on a professionally applied coating. Where a car lands in that range depends on storage (garage vs. outside), washing habits (hand wash vs. brush wash), and how much sun it sees. A garage-kept SUV that gets hand washed monthly will still bead water hard at year four. A work truck parked outside in Kuna and run through brush washes will be closer to two.
10. Does detailing increase resale or trade-in value?
Yes, and usually by more than the detail costs. Dealers and private buyers price a car partly on how well it looks cared for. A clean, corrected, odor-free vehicle photographs better, sells faster, and avoids the "needs reconditioning" deduction at trade-in. On a $25,000 vehicle, a $174.99 detail that moves the offer by a few hundred dollars is an easy return. Ceramic coating on a car you plan to sell in a few years protects the paint that buyers judge first.
11. What do I need to have ready for a mobile detailer?
Three things: a place to park the vehicle where we can work around it, access to a water spigot, and access to a standard outdoor outlet. We bring all of our own equipment, products, towels, and supplies. If you are at an office or apartment, let us know in advance so we can confirm the parking and utility situation before we arrive.
It also helps to clear personal items out of the cabin and trunk. We will work around car seats and cargo, but the more empty the interior, the more of it we can reach.
12. Can you remove pet hair, smoke smell, or stains?
Pet hair, yes. Light to moderate pet hair is part of a normal interior; heavy multi-pet shedding is quoted on inspection because it can add an hour or more. Set-in stains, yes, in most cases, with steam and extraction in the Elite Interior package. Smoke odor is the hardest. We can dramatically reduce it with a deep clean of every fabric surface and the headliner followed by an odor treatment such as ozone or chlorine dioxide, but a cabin that has been smoked in for years may never be fully neutral. We will tell you what to expect before you pay for it.
A few we hear less often, but still every month
Do you detail boats, RVs, and UTVs? Yes. Boats and RVs are priced per foot, UTVs and golf carts per package. All of it is mobile.
Do you charge extra to come to Nampa or Caldwell? Travel is included anywhere in Ada County and for most Canyon County jobs. We confirm it when you book.
Can you come the same day? Often, yes. Same-day and next-day slots open up regularly across the Treasure Valley. Booking online shows you live availability.
Will you give me a price before starting? Always. Every job starts with a free inspection and a confirmed price. No upsells in the middle of a job.
